Our mission is one that comes naturally for us here at Drafty Barn Farm Rescue. As life long horse owners, we have been called upon many times over the years to help horses in need. We have never turned our backs on a horse in need regardless of age, gender, breed, color or health condition. We have owned and shown many horses over the years and have also witnessed the heart wrenching site of good healthy horses being loaded and shipped to slaughter houses throughout the United States and foreign countries.
As equine professionals, we have rescued on a private level, many horses and brought them to the safety of our facility. With the economy as it is today, there are literally thousands of horses now at risk. Without an honest, local rescue organization to step up to the plate and intervene, these lives could quite possibly be lost forever. Some are even rescued by warriors who claim to be rescuers just to end up being euthanized within days of thinking they are safe. Not every facility is equipped or ascertains the knowledge to handle untrained horses, stallions or those with medical conditions that warrant time and proper care and training to overcome. We however, are and gladly offer help to those types of horses inorder to save their lives.
We have decided to further open our doors to help as many horses as we possibly can. There are horses who are suffering right here in our own backyard and we do everything in our power to help when/wherever we can. When time and space allow, we attend the local auctions and purchase the less fortunate horses out of the kill buyer pens. We have the connections to save as many lives as we have good, caring & reliable homes to place them in.
There have been many occasions that we have taken in horses who were in deplorable condition and rehabilitated them and found them new jobs, or families who love and adore them.
We do not attempt to have owners who wish to surrender their horses due to unforeseen circumstances, prosecuted for neglect or cruelty. We have a no questions asked policy here at Drafty Barn Rescue - If you are in need of help in rehoming your horse, just give us a call and we will help in any way we possibly can, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
We are a fully equipped facility with 157 acres of pasture and cropland. We also have 2 huge barns in which to house not only our former rescue horses who are permanant residents, but also those who are in current need of rescue and rehabilitation.
We can fully assess all horses who come into our care and evaluate them for their abilities. No need to guess whether or not the drafts coming from us are broke to harness or not- we own several draft harness' and each draft horse in our care will be properly fitted and tested for driving abilities by an EXPERIENCED TEAMSTER/DRIVER.
We also strive to make ourselves available to our local community in order to help with education and knowledge of proper animal husbandry. We are very involved with our local Extension Agency and 4-H programs in our county. We have donated countless hours of our time to helping children learn as well as mentored many with regard to proper feeding and nutritional needs.
We also do not believe in lining the pockets of Broker lot owners who purchase horses at sale barns and jack the prices up for self gain. Many local rescues constantly buy from and support these individuals and it is our strong belief that this is not the most beneficial method in obtaining or saving lives. The additional fees added above the purchase price, would ultimately cost another less fortunate horse their life due to a lack of available funds. The high prices of traveling to and transporting from these broker facilities, also costs local horses their lives. Rescue and help should start at home in order to stop the horses from ending up in the auction barns awaiting their fate. We hold strong to this belief and although we do assist auction horses to safety, our main focus is in our own back yard.
Our Mission and who we are:
With your help and support, there is a ray of hope and a light at the end of the dark tunnel of death.
We would also like to at this time thank two of ladies who work closely with us in saving horses from slaughter when funds and homes are available to do so from Sugarcreek Livestock Auction.
Kathy ~~ New Cumberland, Wva.
Kathy will jump right in and hook up to her trailer day or night and head out to pick up a load at Sugarcreek and haul them nearly anywhere we ask her to, within reason. She never asks us for a dime to reimburse her for even her gas. She is also a huge asset in helping directly with pulling horses out of kill pens. Contact: kdrosieb@yahoo.com
Rachael ~~New Cumberland, Wva
What an asset to have on our side. Rach is the photographer, handler at auction, internet guru and massive networker of rescue horses! She is very active also in listing and watching for Off The Track Thoroughbreds. She works hard to keep these less fortunate from actually being allowed to ship to slaughter.
