Are you looking to adopt a horse or become a horse owner?
If we do not have any rescued horses who fit your match, let us know what you are looking for and we will attempt to help you in finding a rescue horse that will fit your needs. There are hundreds of horses each week who face the fear of being shipped to slaughter at the hands of unknowing or uncaring owners. Some just end up in this situation due to job loss or a change in family circumstances. Not all horse who end up at auction are there due to physical, mental or training issues.
We ask that you be as specific as you can with regard to what type of horse you desire. There are usually horses of all breeds and disciplines at these sales. We also encounter many youngsters who haven't had a chance to even begin living their precious lives. We can almost always pull you a companion horse if this is what you are looking for.
When to contact us?
Please feel free to contact us at anytime to let us know what you are looking for. We may not find it at the current sale, but it may be at the sale following. We never know what will be offered from week to week.
What additional information is needed from me?
Auctions are fast paced and horses sell continually. Therefore we will need a contact number where you can be reached during normal business hours. We will not purchase/pull a horse in your name with out verifying details with you first.
What are the fees included with rescuing a kill pen horse?
In an effort to save as many lives as possible, we do not charge any fees other than the actual cost of the horse pulled. Those fees include a coggins test and actual price paid for the horse. Often times we will bid in the ring against the Kill Buyers, however if the bidding is unsuccessful we do attempt to work with them after the auction to secure horses. In this instance, there may be an additional fee placed on the horse by the KB. (usually anywhere from $50-$150 depending on the KB involved)
You do need to let us know what price range you are looking to stay within.
That way we are not surprised when we think we have found your special horse and you are not comfortable with the price paid.
Where will I pick up my new horse?
There are a few options available here:
1. Drafty Barn can haul the horse to our facility for pick up with in a dey or two.
2. The horse can be hauled privately from the sale.
3. If we have an approved foster facility within the state who is close to you, the horse could possibly be transported there to await pick up.
4. If you live out of state, the horse will need to be fostered for at least a week to 10 days to await the coggins paperwork that is needed to transport across state lines. Each foster sets their own QT/Board fees and those details will need to be worked out individually and accordingly.
***Please keep in mind that if transported by Drafty Barn or one of our volunteers, you will need to reimburse the transporter for expenses only. No mileage or hourly fees.
***We also highly recommend that you be prepared to QT horses coming from auction for a minimum of 30 days. All horses should be treated with anitbiotics for shipping fever. This is largely due to the fact that there is usually no knowledge of the history of auction horses and where they have been or what they have been exposed to.
